How do I choose dishwashers?

Before you speak to a Grandview Kitchens design consultant about new dishwashers, it's a good idea to consider these points:
- Size - Are you washing dishes for a busy family or just a couple? Larger dishwashers can be very water efficient, but if you might take days to fill one up, you can consider a smaller machine or one with separate dish drawers. That way, you can use one drawer for everyday use, but with the capacity to take the dishes for a whole family feast. Some larger dishwashers also have 'half-load' settings for smaller loads.
You also need to consider the size available in your kitchen to fit the dishwasher. Most dishwashers are a standard size, but you can get smaller ones for tight spaces - these are particularly good in apartments and units.
- Energy and water efficiency - Efficiency is becoming increasingly important as we try to reduce our environmental impact. Check the 'star rating' on your dishwasher, and the availability of cold and hot cycle options. Dishwashers with hot water only connections do not need to heat the water, but cannot use cold water cycles. Those with hot and cold connections use hot water only when necessary and can be more energy efficient.
- Adjustability - Some dishwashers have adjustable shelves and racks to suit your needs.
- Position in your kitchen - It's not ideal to place dishwashers next to a fridge as it will actually cause your fridge to be less energy efficient. This is a good tip to remember when planning location of appliances with your Grandview Kitchens consultant.
