| Choosing ovens - appliances for the heart of your
kitchen
For centuries, the oven was the heart of
the kitchen. Wood ovens and open fires were the only way to cook in ovens.
Appliances today are very advanced - how things have changed!
Today's range of ovens, appliances and
cooking technology mean you can choose the exact oven to suit you. See the
ovens in our kitchen gallery and on this page.
Whether you're cooking for an army of
relies or a simple dinner for two, you'll have the right oven.
Ovens, appliances and you - how do they measure up?
Ovens come in many sizes, shapes and with
many different features. Your oven's appliances and features should suit how
you normally use it - at a cost that suits your budget. Here are some things to
think about when choosing an oven.
- Style - What sort of décor is the rest of your kitchen going to have
(or does it already have)? You can choose popular brushed stainless steel
or aluminium finishes, country style or freestanding, commercial or even
retro.
- Cost - Want bigger ovens? Appliances that are larger are generally
more expensive, and ovens are no exception. Prices also vary with different
finishes.
- Type - Electric or gas? Freestanding or built-in?

What features should my oven have?
Ovens - appliances that aren't as simple as
you may think! Different ovens have different features. Here are some common
ones to think about:
- Gas or electric - Both have their pros and cons. However, you will need access
to natural gas outlet to have a gas oven.
- Grill - You can choose an internal or external grill. Although an
internal grill limits the oven's use (you can't grill and cook at the same
time), but it does take up less space.
- Fan - Particularly important in gas ovens, fans help distribute
the heat evenly around the oven.
- Size - Want to be able to have the entire extended family over for
dinner? Go as big as you can. If you don't regularly use the oven, a
smaller oven will free-up room in your kitchen.
- Double ovens are two separate ovens alongside or above
one-another which operate as one oven.
- Extra-wide ovens are larger than normal - great for catering
for large number of people or for baking large amounts at one time.
- Freestanding or
built-in - Built in ovens can be positioned
anywhere, but freestanding ones do not need a bench for support.
- Cleaning - No one likes cleaning the oven! Regular ovens need cleaning
by hand, but self-cleaning ovens have a very high heat cycle which turns
gunk into dust. You can also buy continuous cleaning ovens, which aren't
as effective as the self-cleaning ones but use less energy.
